Following the devastation caused by the Second World War, Piju Vassallo embarked on a mission to rebuild the nation, clearing war debris and laying the groundwork for what would become one of Malta's most respected business groups. Early partnerships and strategic vision set the foundation for decades of growth and innovation.
During the 1970s, the Group expanded its construction portfolio and strengthened its reputation through major public and private projects. A key milestone was its collaboration with Danish partners, introducing new building methods and elevating quality standards. This period laid the groundwork for
future diversification beyond construction.
The 1990s marked a transformative shift as the Group diversified into elderly care with the launch of CareMalta and the opening of Casa Arkati, Malta’s first purposely built home for the elderly. The Group also entered the education sector, broadening its social impact and laying foundations for future community‑focused growth.
During the 2000s, the Group continued strengthening the CareMalta brand through new homes and higher professional standards, while also expanding decisively into property development and hospitality. This decade marked a shift toward a broader commercial portfolio, highlighted by landmark projects such as the Golden Sands Resort in 2005, which showcased the Group’s growing ambition and capability.
In 2010, the Group strengthened its multi-sector identity with the launch of CaterEssence, the opening of Roseville within CareMalta, and progress in major construction projects such as the St Elmo Valletta Bridge installed in 2012. This period marked the Group’s evolution into a fully integrated organisation operating across construction, care, hospitality, education, and property.
In 2016, the Group launched HILA, expanding its care portfolio into disability and community services. This period also saw major progress in property development through OneOne0, alongside a wider modernisation drive that strengthened systems, digital capabilities, and leadership structures to support long-term strategic growth.
From 2020 and years to follow the Group advanced major developments including the Vassallo Business Park, Campus Hub, and the Mediterranean College of Sport, while also expanding CareMalta’s national presence through Dar San Ġużepp in Gozo. Despite global disruption, the Group accelerated digital transformation, strengthened sustainability efforts, and demonstrated exceptional resilience across all sectors.
In 2026, Vassallo Group celebrates 80 years of building, caring, and innovating. This milestone honours the people and values that shaped the organisation while reaffirming its commitment to sustainability, education, and community wellbeing. The anniversary marks a forward-looking moment, blending legacy with a renewed vision for Malta’s future.
